The Artful Canine is a small dog accessories design shop that designs fashion dog collars, martingale dog collars, dog leashes and step-in dog harnesses. Our collars and accessories are sold exclusively online through this website, offering over 50 different designs and 300 diffent styles of dog walking gear and accessories.

The company was created in 2009 by Joanne Wood-Ellison, who also operated The Artful Groomer, a home-based dog grooming salon. Joanne, a career designer, fashion retailer and dog enthusiast was frustrated by the lack of affordable, unique dog collar designs in the marketplace. Not only did she have trouble finding cute, fashionable collars for her dogs, she found that most were made poorly and didn't wear very well. Having had sewing experience, Joanne decided to try her hand at making a few collars and selliong them to her grooming clients.

Starting out with a small industrial machine and some cute fabric ribbons, Joanne created her signature Charming Dog Collar style, a collar that had a sewn-in FOB for attaching dog charms and I.D. tags. The charming collar solved the problem of tag damage and noise when affixed to the D-ring of a collar. By sewing in a collar FOB, one could hang a dog's ID tag or decorative charm instead of the leash D-ring. A dog charm or tag lies neatly, face-out, against a dogs neck without the interference of a dog leash hook. Dog owners like the collar because of the decorative charms that are offered free with the collars purchase, in addition to the functionality of the collar FOB.

In 2010 The Artful Canine introduced a 4-way adjustable step-in harness and martingale collar to its product line in response to customer demand. Today, we proudly offer one of the biggest selection in decorative martingale collars available online, and continue to add new styles regularly.

We recently added custom order services, and will be introducing new designs throughout the year. We are planning a new engravable Pet ID tag in designs that match our exclusive designs. We will also be expanding our grooming accessories to include a fragrance line and gift packs for those that have just acquired a rescue or puppy, and those embarking on a training program using the martingale collar.
